Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, the Prime Minister, follows up today on the efforts to reduce smuggling and dumping the Egyptian markets, in the presence of Lieutenant General Engineer Kamel El-Wazir, Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development, Minister of Industry and Transport, Mr. Ahmed Kojak, Minister of Finance, Engineer Hassan El-Khatib, Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade, Mr. Walid Gamal El-Din, Chairman of the General Authority for the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE), Mr. Sherif El-Kilani, Deputy Minister of Finance for Tax Policies, Supervisor of the Egyptian Customs Authority, Major General Essam El-Naggar, Chairman of the General Organization for Export and Import Control (GOEIC), Dr. Amany El-Wasal, Head of the Agreements and Foreign Trade Sector at the Ministry of Investment and Foreign Trade, Executive Director of the Export Development Fund, and officials from the ministries and concerned entities.
The Prime Minister confirmed that this meeting aims to follow up on the efforts exerted to reduce smuggling and dumping the Egyptian markets, and to review the measures proposed by the Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development, Minister of Industry and Transport, for implementing these targets.
For his part, Lieutenant General Engineer Kamel El-Wazir pointed out that the Ministerial Committee for Industrial Development received a number of complaints from some Egyptian manufacturers regarding some smuggled goods in the markets, and a number of smuggling cases facing national manufacturers have already been monitored. In this regard, he reviewed a number of important measures proposed in this regard.
During the meeting, the Ministers of Finance and Investment also proposed a number of controls and procedures to be applied in ports or customs, as well as in relation to personal imports, in a way that contributes to increasing governance and controlling violations.
During the meeting, the Prime Minister directed to quickly agree on the reviewed measures and procedures, to be submitted to the Cabinet for approval, in preparation for commencing the implementation, in an effort to achieve complete control of this system.
Counselor Mohamed El-Homosany, Egyptian Cabinet's Official Spokesperson stated that the meeting reviewed the harvest of the Customs Authority's efforts in combating customs smuggling during 2024, noting that last year witnessed the issuance of about 58.8 thousand reports, resulting in the collection of 4.84 billion pounds. These reports included crimes of smuggling narcotics, alcohol and cigarettes, fabrics and textiles, weapons and fireworks, medicines and foodstuffs, various devices, gold and silver jewelry, mobiles and their accessories, cars and spare parts, chemicals and pesticides, in addition to crimes of documents tampering, smuggling foreign currency, and antiquities.
